Rev. Samuel Rodriguez: GOP Losing Latino Evangelicals

The GOP and Latino evangelicals: Candidates' immigration views could alienate a natural group of supporters (by William McKenzie, Dallas Morning News - 9.4.07)

A note here for Mitt, Fred, Rudy and the gang:

You guys gunning for the GOP nomination really should pay attention to the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez and the many other Latino evangelicals who think like the California pastor. They are natural Republicans, but if your party keeps up its anti-immigrant rhetoric, you can forget them coming your way.

This is correct. However, sometimes it is necessary to stand up for principle as opposed to political expediency. We need a stable population with legal immigration reduced to no more than 200,000 per year and all illegals who cannot qualify for an H2-A visa deported. Those who favor open borders and mass legalization of the illegals don't know what that would mean to the quality of life or standard of living in the U.S., including theirs. Inevitably an open borders approach will mean an equilibrium between the standard of living of the exporting countries and that of the U.S.. Guess what that means for our standard of living. Guess what that means for our consumption of dwindling natural resource -- petroleum, arable land, water, minerals. Guess what that means for extinction of species, development or destruction of arable land, pollution, climate change, etc. Two hundred million more people in the U.S. by the end of this century will add 20 metric tons of pollutants to the atmosphere per capita. That's 4 billion tons! Good luck with that!
